What is Tinnitus

Tinnitus, or ringing of the ears, is defined as the perception of a sound in the absence of an external sound source.

People suffering from tinnitus can hear a sound in their head or in one or both ears. This sound can be whistling, buzzing, waves, crickets, a sound like music, etc.

Tinnitus and Hearing loss

Between 10 and 15% of the population experience constant tinnitus and even people with normal hearing can have tinnitus. However, 90% of people with chronic tinnitus also have hearing loss.

Causes of tinnitus

Many factors can cause or affect tinnitus. It can also occur alongside other health problems. However, tinnitus is not a disease. It’s a sign that the auditory system is not working properly or that there is a more general problem.

While it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of tinnitus, it’s important to consult an audiologist (and/or an ear, nose and throat specialist), to make sure your auditory system is working properly.

It’s also recommended to schedule a check-up appointment with your doctor.
